Design Walk Through
By OCD - Office for Contemporary Design
A private driveway and walkway follow the natural contours of the site and lead to the primary entrance. The house is accessed via a glass box that welcomes the visitor with views up to 290 degrees of the surrounding nature as he/she ascends the staircase to reach the second level of the house. Further down the driveway, a workshop is located adjacent to the porch for ease of vehicular access for loading / unloading any equipment. The porch also acts as a noise barrier between the house and workshop, accommodating two cars and a secondary shaded entrance to the glass box.
‘Manzar Ghar’ which literally means ‘The House of Views’ in Urdu, has been designed with a focus on providing maximum views of the surrounding landscape from the very entry point through the glass box to different private rooms, enhancing the experience of living amidst nature. Vast open terraces extend the outdoor experience of the house, to enjoy the sunlight during winters or host a private event with scenic views of the landscape.
The stairs located in the glass box lead the visitor to the second level, which follows an open floor plan. Full-height glazed, seamless, stack windows open up to a large north facing terrace, giving the entire floor a spacious feel. These stack windows (as the name suggests) slide and stack up next to the fin wall, giving the user multiple variations of window patterns, from closed, semi open to completely open, depending on the need of the day. This floor accommodates a guest room, a family lounge, a dining area, an open kitchen and a formal seating area to the east end of the floor, separating it from the shared family dining and lounge areas via a fireplace cum media wall. The dining area is provided with a dining table and a less formal breakfast island counter which houses all the utilities. A private terrace is located next to the kitchen to enjoy the morning sun with a possibility of having breakfast outside on a nice sunny day.
The entire floor has access to a north facing open terrace which provides a nice shared outdoor deck space with views of the surrounding landscape. The unified family lounge and dining areas are provided with a ‘floating fireplace’ that not only makes the space warm and cozy, but also acts as a media wall that becomes the focal point for the family. This media wall also creates a private corridor access to a staircase located at the south end of this floor which leads to a private floor accommodating bedrooms. To the right of this private corridor, a guest room and shared powder room are also located, separated from the shared family space.
The floating staircase leads to a private lobby on the third level of the house. This lobby is lit by the north sun and accommodates the entrances to all three bedrooms, two children’s bedrooms to the west and a master bedroom to the east. Both the children’s bedrooms share a bathroom which is accessed through the lobby. One of the children’s bedroom faces the north and overlooks the landscape, while the other is a slightly larger room with a personal balcony facing the south. The master bedroom is designed with a seamless full height north-east corner window, providing the best possible views of the ocean and the city underneath. It has a walk-in closet and a luxurious ensuite bathroom. The bathroom also offers a corner window so as to enjoy the view while taking a shower.
Terraces on both the levels offer hard landscape, comprising of wooden decks, white crushed gravel, concrete planters and concrete floor finishes, blending in the surrounding natural landscape. Different locations have been identified throughout the house as viewing points and have been provided with seating to enhance and experience the nature around.
