We are hoping to create a new furniture arrangement for our combined living room/dining room space. It is a very nice space with high vaulted ceilings, but also somewhat unusual in layout and we want to improve its functionality. In our current arrangement, we have room for a large dining room table, a small sitting area with two swivel chairs, two bar stools, and a couch in the nook behind the table. We have attached a pdf of the floor plan; you can also log into to our Floorplanner.com account to see more precise dimensions (including furniture dimensions, login info below).
What we like about what we have: We like the aesthetics of the current space. We are just a couple living here, and so the space works very well for our current needs. We like having a table that is large enough to host a big dinner. And when it is just two of us hanging out/having breakfast/etc., we tend to sit at the two black swivel chairs in our sitting area near the kitchen. We also have a living room area upstairs with couch seating for 8, so when we entertain a larger group we have somewhere else to sit.
What we are hoping to improve: We are hoping to create a space that is more functional for sitting and entertaining for more than just the two of us in our living/dining space. We are having a baby soon, which will bring a number of visitors. One major problem with our current space is that if even 2 other adults come over, we don't really have a good place for 4 people to sit comfortably in our living/dining room space. We could theoretically sit at the table, but people tend to not sit there unless if it is for a meal. Instead, we have found that people tend to stand around the kitchen counter, or sit on the swivel chairs or bar stools. We are hoping to improve the functionality of our space by creating a design that would let 4-6 people sit comfortably. If possible, we would also like to maintain the ability of also having room for 8-10 people to eat dinner.
We are looking only for interior design/furniture rearrangement to create a new floor plan. We have attached a pdf of our current layout. To see a more precise layout of our floor plan (with all dimensions) in our floorplanner.com account, follow the following steps:

We generally like a fairly contemporary look. We are planning to get rid of our dining room table, and would like to buy a new one. Please make specific recommendations. For other furniture, we are open to new purchases, but also hoping to use some of the furniture that we already own.
1. Comfortable seating for 4-6 people. This could involve new furniture, or some of the furniture we already own. Please make specific recommendations if you suggest that we purchase furniture. We could also get new rugs if you think that our current rugs are the wrong size.
2. Purchasing a new dining room table. Please make specific recommendations. We still want to have a dining room table that would seat 8-10. We only need to sit 4 on a day-to-day basis, and so it would be fine with us if this is a table that expands only for when we have larger parties. Either way, we are looking for a dining room table that is a bit more contemporary. To give a sense of our price range, we often shop at West Elm. We hope to buy a new table that is under $1000 (although we would consider up to $2,000 for the ideal table). We will need chairs too.
3. We are concerned about the room's "flow". In it's current format, the two swivel chairs seem to be the natural point of gravity for the room -- everyone sits around there, near the kitchen. We want to make sure that whatever ends up being our sitting area maintains the sense of "center" of the room, so that people actually sit there.
A few ideas we have considered:
-- When we bought the condo, the people who lived here before us had a circular dining room table in the spot where our black swivel chairs are, and a couch/chair sitting area by the fireplace. They then had an armoire for dishes in the nook where our current couch is. This could work, however the space felt somewhat cramped to us, and this only allowed dining for 4 at their dining room table. We attached an image of this.
-- Our neighbor has a more narrow table that fits roughly where our dining room table is, but extends back into the nook where our couch is. He then has a couch where our swivel chairs are (and so his primary sitting area is also in the space right by the kitchen). This could also work, however would then require a creative idea for a functional sitting space for 4-6 in the area near the kitchen where our current swivel chairs are.
Images attached: We attached images of our current space, an image of how the apartment was arranged before we moved in, as well as images of some extra chairs we have available that we could potentially use in a sitting area.
I am also available for questions if you have any! Please feel free to contact me Thank you!!
